چکیده
To understand the formation and evolution of exoplanet systems, we would like to have empirical theoretical tools for predicting whether a given planetary system is stable—or, more precisely, what is its lifetime before some catastrophic event such as a collision or ejection—without having to integrate the planetary orbits for the lifetime of the host star. There are two discouraging lessons from studies of the stability of the solar system that we should bear in mind. First, small changes in the initial conditions or system parameters can lead to large changes in the lifetime. Second, chaos does not necessarily imply instability: in the solar system the likely lifetime is at least 1000 times longer than the Liapunov time.

An Anyon Primer
In this set of lectures, we give a pedagogical introduction to the subject of anyons. We discuss 1) basic concepts in anyon physics, 2) quantum mechanics of two anyon systems, 3) statistical mechanics of many anyon systems, 4) mean field approach to many anyon systems and anyon superconductivity , 5) anyons in field theory and 6) anyons in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE). ⋆ E-mail add...

In these lectures we discuss some basic aspects of Hamiltonian formalism, which usually do not appear in standard texbooks on classical mechanics for physicists. We pay special attention to the procedure of Hamiltonian reduction illustrating it by the examples related to Hopf maps. Then we briefly discuss the supergeneralisation(s) of the Hamiltonian formalism and present some simple models of ...
متن کاملPoincare, Celestial Mechanics, Dynamical-systems Theory and ~chaos~~*
As demonstrated by the success of James Gleick’s recent book [19871,there is considerable interest in the scientific community and among the general public in “chaos” and the “new science” which is supposed to accompany it. However, as usual, it is not easy to separate hyperbole from fact. In an attempt to do this, I will offer a precise definition of chaos in the context of differential equati...
متن کاملPark City Lectures on Mechanics, Dynamics, and Symmetry
i Preface In these five lectures, I cover selected items from the following topics: 1. Reduction theory for mechanical systems with symmetry, 2. Stability, bifurcation and underwater vehicle dynamics, 3. Systems with rolling constraints and locomotion, 4. Optimal control and stabilization of balance systems, 5. Variational integrators. Each topic itself could be expanded into several lectures, ...
متن کاملLectures on (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity
These lectures briefly review our current understanding of classical and quantum gravity in three spacetime dimensions, concentrating on the quantum mechanics of closed universes and the (2+1)-dimensional black hole. Three formulations of the classical theory and three approaches to quantization are discussed in some detail, and a number of other approaches are summarized. An extensive, althoug...
